A while back I posted an article describing the new program Project Neon and recomended it as an easy method of sharing media files amongst family and friends.
I hope this tutorial gives you a better idea of what Project Neon's all about. If you're looking for a quick and easy way of transferring media files between you and other users it's the way to go. This is especially so if your looking for a simple way to allow those that are less tech savy to share home videos or pictures with you and others. I'll go over some of the more advanced features of Project Neon in a guide to soon follow. In the meantime, enjoy.
First off, after downloading Project Neon and installing it, you wil find yourself at the network's homepage.
Called the "Hub," here you'll notice a quick pick of videos to check out.
To get started we'll begin by setting up our groups and contacts so that we have somebody to share to. Navigate to the Find and Add Contacts tab so that we can first add users to manage.
After adding your contacts, go to the Manage Groups tab as shown below. This is probably the most important feature on Project Neon as it will make it easier to determine how and with whom you share the media albums you create. For instance, you can a have a group called "friends" and one called "family." This would make it easier to add albums into their proper share categories. We don't wan't mom accidentally watching the latest "Girls Gone Wild" clip now do we? And of course, we don't want your friend Billy Bob getting a peek at those childhood pics involving little more than you and a bearskin rug right?
In managing your groups be sure to give a brief description so as to clarify who's who. Setting album permissions relates only to those albums that have already been created, so no need to worry about this option as of yet.
Now the real fun begins. We'll set up some media albums for you to share.
Navigate to and click Add Individual Album as shown in the picture below.
Next will come up the album creation screen. Here choose a name and description for the album you are going to share and select whether it will contain adult content or not. The ratings feature can be adjusted in the settings and preferences panel with a password option to prevent children from viewing inappropriate content. Though strangely enough, whats considered "adult" or not is left to the inklings of the individual user so chances are "adult" content isn't always labeled properly.
Next select the visibility of the album, be it nobody, everyone, or selected contacts and groups. This is the most important feature here as this is how you will determine the nature and the depth of the album's availability. Nobody means exactly that. Everyone means that it's avaialble for any to view or watch. Selected groups and contacts allows you to pick and choose the scale of who you want to give access to the media albums you create. Also to note, theres a selection in regards to downloading the material in your albums. Checking this box allows your contacts to download the album content, otherwise they are simply allowed to stream it from your PC. To finish up, choose the media files to include in your album, be it video, audio, or pictures and click "ok.
Now you're all setup to share media with friends and family worldwide without the hassle of dealing with FTP sites or any other such headaches. To get people you know motivated to use Project Neon, send them an invite so that they can a get a quicker feel for what the program's all about.
Navigate to the Share an Album tab to bring up the invite feature. Now put in the e-mail addresses of those you wish to send an invite to.
Finish up by selecting the media files for them to check out and adding a personal message to let them know what the deal is.
Remember also that there are albums designated "public" by others for all to view. To check them out type in a search query in the search bar and select Project Neon Public Albums. Unfortunately, you can't browse by broad categories or file types, but what you can do is browse by the letters A-Z and see what you can find. Some of the stuff on there is pretty wild, from random picture snapshots to home videos. It's all out there for anyone to see. In addition, the "Hub" main page has a variety of videos and other material available for people to check out and watch.
